The Power Of Challenges

Let me tell you a small story…

There was a third year student back when I was studying in college and he aspired to become a Google Summer of Code student, a prestigious internship program that will pay the participant a stipend of 5000$ of cash and a chance to work with and contribute with an open source community for the summer. The challenging aspect of this dream was that no one in his college has ever participated in this program before (even though the program has been around for more than 5 years and many students across the world has participated in it so far). This was a dream that he wanted to achieve, to be the first in his college and to participate in this prestigious programme. It was a big challenge for him. Luckily, he started early (more than 6 months before the project was announced) and got a head-start. He also made a conscious choice of giving up on his other plans (to do a masters degree) so that he can only focus on this one challenge that he set for himself.

Long story cut short, he got selected into the program and completed his challenge.. A seemingly steep climb before he set off the path, became a predictable and simple climb once he is at the other side of challenge.

Ladies & Gentlemen, that’s the power of challenges. It’s a way for someone.. anyone.. to push their boundaries and seek the seemingly impossible. And more often than not, one always looks back from the other side of challenge (after completing a challenge) and wonders why the challenge seemed so tough and impossible at the beginning.

I have tried to be busy during these times of lockdown and excited myself and completed various challenges. These are below:-

#21DaysOfAbundance where I challenged myself to meditate everyday for 21 days. This was a community challenge started by my friend Sean over, conducted over Whatsapp

#21DaysOfFitness where I had to perform different exercises everyday, hosted by runningyogi over Whatsapp

#25Pushups in a single set. I thought this was impossible for a laid-back techie like me. It took me couple of months and many sweaty sessions to reach here. Now, I can easily do four sets of 25 pushups in an exercise session. Yaay!

I am writing this blog to announce a new challenge that I am setting for myself #100DaysOfCode. I have been coding more than 10 years and I think I became complacent at my personal coding. This is a challenge for me to code outside of work and finish all those side projects and learning projects I keep dreaming about. Wish me luck!
